FC Bayern Munich have announced the formation of Bavaria Ballers Gaming, an esports division to sit within the club’s basketball group, FC Bayern Basketball, who will compete in Take-Two Interactive’s NBA 2K league.
It is no secret that FC Bayern have been planning to enter the esports space for some time as a part of their strategy to increase their global reach and engagement. The surprise is that FC Bayern have chosen to lead its esports division with an NBA 2K team, rather to follow European football counterparts PSG and Manchester City into esports with FIFA.
NBA 2K, however, has exploded in popularity over the past year as the NBA has prepared to launch the NBA 2K League, the first esports league owned and operated by a professional sports league. FC Bayern involvement is undoubtedly a ‘hat-tip’ towards to its success but although an intelligent play to develop the brand and global reach.
