The athlete that drives the most social media interactions is not who you might think.
Immediate thoughts might be football genius’ Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, NFL quarterback Tom Brady or NBA legend LeBron James.
In fact it is a 26 year old Esports athlete called Tyler Blevins, better known by his online name, ‘Ninja’. In April, he generated more than 150 million social interactions (according to Hookit.com) which placed him no.1 among all athletes.
There are over 2.2 billion gamers in the world. Tech and media companies, and now traditional sports leagues and teams are paying very keen attention to Esports, in part due to the growth opportunities, engagement levels and appeal to the millennial demographic
The growth of this digital sport has happened away from traditional broadcast, but with the huge engagement levels and audiences sports rights holders, agencies and advertisers are fast being attracted to this rapidly expanding market.
