VR helping broadcasters increase audience engagement for the European Championships

With the European Championships kicking off this week, the Virtual Reality App The European Championships Lounge has been launched. This app will offer fans immersive coverage of the multi-sport event, including over 50 hours of VR content using 180 and 360 cameras at Germany’s Olympic Stadium

Combining virtual and augmented reality, the portal will allow fans to “live the event to the fullest” and experience athletics like never before. Users will be able to access immersive swimming, gymnastics, rowing, cycling, golf, sprints, relays, throws, jumps, while enjoying live statistics and keeping track of individual nation’s rankings.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), in partnership with its business arm Eurovision Media Services (EMS), is helping member broadcasters increase audience engagement for the European Championships with a suite of new services and tools for members. EBU members will have the ability to tailor the VR experience they offer to their audiences as a supplementary tool.

“The EBU has been a supporting partner of the European Championships since its inception, with a clear desire to not only bring the widest possible exposure for the event, but to also lead the way in innovation for how the event is promoted and presented to audiences. This approach will drive new audiences to the coverage, creating a massive footprint across all screens, supporting and helping our Member broadcasters and partners to the fullest. We’re proud to have worked together with our Members, EMS and key event stakeholders to deliver on this ambition.”
Stefan Kürten, Director EBU Sport

This is another example of major events embracing virtual and augmented reality options for their fans, including the World Cup 2018 earlier this summer. The Sport Innovation Network will be continuing discussion on these trends at the 2nd Annual Immersive Technology in Sport & Entertainment in San Francisco, 14-15 November 2018.

The European Championships is a major new multisport event taking place every four years, combining the existing senior continental championships of European Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing, Triathlon and a new Golf Team Championships under a common brand. The athletics will take place in Berlin from 7-12 August 2018 while athletes from the other sports will be competing in Glasgow 2-12 August 2018.
